Is MRSA just a hospital infection?
Some people catch MRSA in hospital because they are already carriers and they self infect a wound. Others catch it because of poor hospital hygiene or infection control. Many have existing medical challenges that the infection makes worse. The hospital strains are resistant to many drugs. It is often treated with vancomycin but higher doses are often needed as MRSA creeps towards resisting this key treatment. The alternative – Linezolid – is much more expensive. In the last 10 years community strains have spread among people with no hospital contact. High risk groups include prisoners, military staff, athletes and children in day care. Sexually active people are alsp prime spreaders of community MRSA. It usually causes skin infections and can be treated with more drugs at this time but in 5-10 years these MRSA strains may be as resistant as the hospital type.
