(Methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus is the medical term that has given us the initials MRSA. It is sometimes called staph, staph infection, golden staph, mercer staph infection, mrsa staff, mrsa staph infection. MRSA is not a virus. Viruses need to infect something to keep on living. Bacteria can exist on their own for months)
Another common hospital infection is C Difficile.

Because you are probably both carriers and both with health vulnerabilities there may be a case for asking for nasal decolonisation as this is the area where it often lingers. As you note she needs you to be her carer. To help protect you both you might want to do a daily clean of high touch areas such as light switches, door handles. Don’t share towels, use a wet wipe to clean the toilet seat. Also do you have family pets as these often carry MRSA and reinfect people.
Ask for medical advice about your situation

I recently had leg surgery to put in two plates where I had broken my tib/fib. The wound on the side of my leg kept looking worse and worse. The surgeon did a culture and it came back positive for mrsa. I most likely contracted it from my daughter. She is 26 and lives with us due to severe health problems. She has end stage congestive heart failure and had a LVAD (left ventricle assist device) in march of 2010. The LVAD has a driveline which goes into heart through a driveline which requires sterile dressings. I am really, really worried that I will pass this on to her. She always tests positive. for mrsa and always has contact precautions while in the hospital. If her driveline becomes infected with mrsa it is a life or death situation.we also share a bathroom. Should we not be living in the same environment until I test negative (which would be difficult because I am her caregivers)? This is making me quite scared and don’t want to do anything to further put her in jepordy. I would really appreciate advice on this.
Sincerely,
Debbie Rodi
It can take some time for the would to heal over. The key is whether it is becoming less inflamed

Should u go back to hospital if u were diagnosed with mersa and the wound is getting deeper and bigger
how long does it take to heal after seeing a Surgeon
It’s hard to say. Key question is – is it getting worse, is the redness spreading. If so go back for a check up

Hello,
My last Doctor Appt was Nov 2nd, that’s when they un packed my wound and put a big baid aid on the wound and told me to keep it covered until it heals. It’s been about 11 days now and the cut where they cut and drained it isn’t closed yet and it’s still red. How long does this thing take to heal? Should I go back to the Doctor’s? Thanks for your help.
The medicine should clear mrsa from your wound – some drugs are better than others at killing it in your bloodstream. It sometimes ‘goes to sleep’ for a long while with some drugs

The sick need help even if they have MRSA. Your mom is carrying out relatively low risk tasks and observing the proper hygiene so there is little to worry about. Many healthy people have MRSA on their skin with no ill effect and become decolonised as they wash and shower

My mom is 66 yrs old and a C.N.A. she is taking care of an 87 yr old with mrsa. Should I be worried ? Is she qualified to take care of her?. The woman does have special people to take care of her wound and change dressings. My mom says she washes her hands a lot and uses hand sanitizer. Should she ask to be taken off the womans’ case?
Hello,
Thanks for answering my questions, really do appreciate it. Now, can the MRSA go into my blood stream after I’m off medicine? I think they said you have to a have a high temperature and mine was 97.
My test says I have moderate growth. Thank you
An infection doctor may have more insight but a general 2nd opinion would be a waste of money. It sounds like you have a moderately bad infection and that the staff are operating wth a balance of caution and concern. I would go back if it was me.

Check the page above – they note allergic reactions similar to what you have seen. It may be deemed to be a lesser ill than no treatment

My 87 year old mom has been treated for MSRA for the last 6 weeks. She goes in daily for a 2 1/2 hour infusion of antibiotics. Now she has a rash all over her body. The doctor and nurse when they saw it today says no problem. I am very concerned. Should I be?
Hello Again,
I went back to the Urgent Care Center this morning and she cut the boil open and drained it, then packed it. She wants me back Wednesday. She said I might have to see a Surgeon. I really don’t want to go this far. Should I go see a Infection Doctor or get a 2nd opinion? Thanks
You are a risk but given the amount of precautions you take, not much of one. Have the doctors said how long it will be before the boil heals.

I have a 4 year old gran daughter and a 4 month old gran daughter. My daughter in law won’t let me be around them. I keep my boil wrap and wear a long sleeve shirt. I wash my hands more now then I ever did. I use a lot of hand sanitizer to. Does she have anything to worry about? This Sunday they are over here watching football but now my gran kids, just my son. Thank you.
Wash your hands a lot and don’t share towels.
